Hi Dr. Jeffrey Mark here. Today I’d like to talk to you about abnormal memory loss. In our previous discussion we went through normal mild short-term memory usually associated with aging. In this second part we will look at dementia which is defined as a significant, persistent, and disabling decline in two or more intellectual capabilities such as memory, judgement, abstract reasoning or language that markedly interferes and disrupts the normal daily routines.
Significant memory issues may be associated with early dementia or mild cognitive decline. Memory and cognitive issues can be reversed if the root causes are found and quickly addressed. Otherwise progression or pervasive memory disorders can become so disruptive of your family relationship, social activities, work, hobbies that they resemble a dementia syndrome. Treatment needs to address the root causes.
Here are some examples of progressive conditions that are associated with significant memory loss:
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from head injuries or sports injury
- Strokes
- Cerebrovascular disease
- Brain infections (encephalitis, meningitis, etc.)
- Sleep apnea and other sleep-related disorders
- Depression/Anxiety
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders (e.g. progressive supranuclear palsy)
- Frontotemporal dementias
- Epilepsy/seizure disorders
- Brain tumors
- Exposure to pesticides and other neurotoxic chemicals
- Autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis
- Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
An integrated and holistic approach is needed which is found in our AFH Cognitve Health programs. A cognitive Brain assessment is made including a quantitative electroencephalogram or QEEG. Memory and cognitive decline are treated in a mullti faceted approach to cover multiple root causes which usually play a role in most people. Optimizing lifestyle changes including reduction of stress, increase sleep , getting adequate exercise are part of the programs. Correction of nutrient deficiencies, insulin resistance, and imbalanced hormones are also addressed. Nutraceuticals, peptides, and energy medicine help accelerate a favorable response.
